market positionAs you may have learned selling products and making a living online isn’t the easiest thing to do. I mean people come online and they have a ton of options, it seems like everything that could be created has been created.

So with that being said, do I still possible to come online and make a living (sometimes while working part time), Hell yes! And it’s all due to market positioning

Market positioning

Market positioning also referred to as “marketing positioning” Is a perceptual term in which it has nothing to do with anything tangible. It is solely built upon making people think of you and your products first when specific emotional triggers are set off in their mind’s.

Positioning is nothing new to you, you’ve been doing it subconsciously since you were born.

When you were in school you could have positioned yourself to be the class clown, the jock, the bully, the teachers pet, the gossip girls, the loner, an emo the list goes on. But these are all forms of positioning, when people first think of the jock-they think of you, when people think of the bully-they think of you, etc, etc.

Ok- So when someone thinks of burgers, most people would say McDonalds, If you say theme park, Disney World comes to mind…These companies have positioned themselves to be the first in your line of ideas when considering doing business in those fields. This results in them getting the most traffic/visitors.

It’s similar to being in the #1 spot on the first page of google for a specific keyword. That #1 one spot always gets the most traffic, but that’s because that person has positioned their site to be in that spot.

You can position your business as well…here’s how.

Ask yourself these questions

I want you to understand that market positioning will be your strongest competitive strategy in your arsenal of business tactics. It makes your business and products standout in a way that differentiates you from the crowd.

So while the crowd is all doing the same boring things, you hit them with something unique and you run with it. It’s like getting a glass of water and then adding a drop of oil to it. That oil separates from the crowd (the high quality H20) and rises to the top. You then have no choice but to notice that drop of oil. And this my friend is exactly how you want your business to stand out.

But it all starts with questions… You need to dig deep to find out what makes you different than everybody else and how can you use that to make an income online.

So I want you to answer these questions honestly:

  • What’s the one thing your business or product best, that comes hard to the competition?
  • What’s unique about your product or service
  • How easy (or hard) would it be for a competitor to come along and knock you out of your strong position (warren buffett calls this a moat)
  • What specific phrase would you use to describe your business or products? (the best burgers, the most quality watches, built Ford tough…)
  • Is your brand strong enough to pull over new customers from the competition?

Answering those questions will give you a good insight as to what your strengths are. It might be hard for you to answer them at first but don’t rush it. if it takes an hour or more do yourself some justice and spend that time answering these questions.

-Optional- To find even more leaks and weaknesses in your competitive edge you can take the above questions, but answer them for your competition. Once you find out what they are strong at and weak, and you find out what you are strong and weak at you will have a better chance at finding an opportunity to rise above your competition like oil in water!!

(How did you like that call back to the oil and water anecdote. that’s an old trick I learned while performing comedy!! Uhhh random)

the 4 elements of market positioning

Anytime I’m doing positioning research there are 4 elements that I like to focus on. You can focus on more if you choose to do so, but I like to keep things simple in my business so I focus on the 4 most important parts of formulating my positioning strategy.

These 4 elements are areas are to help you attack and inflitrate in order to better position yourself as a leader in your niche.

This list is in order of what I believe to be of greatest importance to the least important.

  1. Service-What benefits and features does your products offer that your competition doesn’t or can not? What’s unique about your customer service? What is the number one most specific and unique reason a person should use your product’s and not anyone else.
  2.  Quality-Does your products meet or exceed the expectations of your customers? Would your customers recommend this product to their closest friends? Does the product over deliver on what was promised? (Quality is perceptual in which it is based upon each customers expectations, evaluations and experience with your products… basically give what you promised to give, never under deliver!)
  3.  Distribution- When what unique way can you deliver your products to your customer? Can you secure quick over night shipping or else they get their money back? If you’re dealing with digital products can your products be delivered to phones, computers and other technologies? How can you uniquely distribute your products?
  4.  Pricing-Yes pricing is last because it’s the worst element to focus on. Because if your only competitive edge is low prices, all your competition has to do is lower their prices. then you will have to lower yours again in order to maintain your position as the business with the lowest prices. after this ridiculous tug-o-war pricing battle, your prices will be so low that you start to notice diminishing returns. You aren’t making money like before, your business fails and it’s back to a normal J-O-B. NEVER FOCUS ON PRICE.

-But one trick I like to use is to create a product that I wholeheartedly believe would sell for a higher price, lets just say $120 for this example. Then when I put it on the market I’ll slap it with a $70 dollar price tag instead.  Once customers recognize that the value received was worth $120 but they only paid $70 they will be more than happy to purchase from me again in the future.

Positioning, when used effectively, can help you be first in the mind.  Being first in mind equals ownership.  Market ownership allows you to be a big fish in a small pond.  When you’re a big fish, you can always increase the size of the pond.

The Point

To get the attention of customers you need to find out what are your most unique and special strengths so that you can position yourself ahead of the competition.
Market positioning is a strategy that will force your customers to think of you when they are looking to do business or make a purchase within your niche. Not only do you want them tho think of you…But you want them to think of you first!
